Everything Has Changed
The last time we spoke I was poised to begin a new chapter in my life and career. In January, I began a 6-month intensive training and certification program for personal training and fitness coaching at the Wingate Institute in Netanya, Israel. If you’ll recall, the program was in Hebrew and I really wasn’t sure I’d be able to handle it. I also had serious doubts about my ability to keep up as a 50-year old, among 20-somethings – both in terms of learning and fitness.
We had to pass several practical tests of fitness to graduate from the course. I had to bench press 32 kgs for 10 reps, squat 34 kgs for 10 reps, and run 2 km in 12 minutes. (The picture above is the day of the running test.) I trained hard for these practical exams and sailed through all of them with flying colors. (And not to brag, but I did a lot better than many of my much younger classmates!)
Academically, I also excelled, graduating near the top of my class. I studied harder than I have ever studied in my life! I put almost everything else in my life on hold and just put my nose to the grindstone. Anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, sports injury, TRX training, strength training, aerobics, flexibility, mobility, personal training skills and writing fitness assessments and plans for clients… all in Hebrew! It was a grueling 6 months, but honestly a lot of fun too. Turns out, I absolutely LOVED learning again and will definitely keep taking classes for the rest of my life. How had I let that go?
So, all those paralyzing fears and self doubts? Total bullshit I was telling myself. I still got it, baby!
Another massive thing that happened is that I got a car! No big deal to most people, but I had been in a major car accident right before leaving for Israel 10 years ago (literally the day before we were due to leave!). With all the stress of moving to another country and all that entailed, I allowed myself to nurture a complete driving phobia here. It was limiting my life so severely that I just couldn’t stand it anymore. I got a used car, forced myself to drive it (with my heart in my throat!), each drive a little easier than the last. After a bit of time, I can now say that the phobia is mostly conquered.
For the past 6 months, I jumped through flaming hoops of fire, one right after the other. As it turns out, I kind of… no… I really, REALLY like the adrenaline rush! Remember how I wrote a blog once about how I used to be a badass, moved to Israel and disappeared into this panicked shell of fear and stuckness? As expected, the only way out of that stuck place was to literally push my way through it and come out on the other side. And now I feel like I am my old, bold self again, yay!
So, now I have a new career, a new car, a new command of the language and a brand new set of brass cojones. I am so very proud of myself for getting unstuck from all the muck!
Here’s what’s going to happen with Triumph Wellness next:
- No more vegan meal planning service (although meal plans can be created for training clients as needed)
- I am also doing away with the 4 month Nutrition Program. No more just talking about food without also practicing fitness. Reason for this is below.
- I will be training clients in person, here in my area (HaSharon, Netanya, Petach Tikvah and everywhere in between). If a client wants to lose weight or to work on better nutrition, then we will work on fitness AND nutrition. I am a double threat now and I am SO excited to be able to get even better results for my clients now!
- I might be training clients online, but not at the moment. If it’s something you’d be interested in, email me at email@example.com. I need to work out the logistics of it.
- I am now working with Hebrew-speaking clients. Wow, that only took 10 years… Hebrew page will soon be up and you can send all your Israeli friends to me (please!).
Why am I changing my business?
After 11 years of nutrition coaching, I was burned out. I was frustrated that while some people did manage to make long term changes to their diet, many people weren’t able to make even a single change! No matter how small I broke the steps down and how certain the client was that she’d be able to accomplish it, we’d meet a week or two later and she’d say “You know, I was motivated when I left here, but then I didn’t look at my notes or even think about you or what we had talked about until like 10 minutes ago.”
Listen, making changes is really hard and I am not coming down on my clients. If anything, I am the one who felt responsible for not being able to motivate them to succeed. But I also know that one has to be ready for change and that motivation comes from within, no matter what a coach does or says. However, the above clients who had trouble making changes, were ALWAYS people who were completely sedentary. Clients who were willing to move a bit and start some exercise, always had better results. There is such an enormous connection between figuratively being stuck in life and physically being literally un-moving. Energy has to move in order for things to change.
The final straw came one day as I was listening to a podcast by a fellow health coach who is also a personal trainer. She said “When you work with a nutrition-only client for 4 months, it can happen that nothing at all changes for that person. But when I am training a person for 4 months, even if they make zero changes to their diet, they will still be better off for having had all those hours of training. They won’t have lost weight, but they will be stronger, healthier, and happier then when we started.”
Those words banged around in my head for a few weeks before I decided to apply to Wingate. I knew she was right and I knew what I needed to do to be an even better coach.
I know that there will still be frustrations – all lifestyle change is challenging for people. But what better person to coach you through it than someone who has just accomplished her own major life change?
So my friends, that’s the update. In the next day or two, I will be putting out an offer for totally FREE personal training to get me started. That offer is going to go out first to my mailing list and spaces are limited. If you are not on my mailing list, and are interested in nabbing a free spot, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll put you on the list.
I’m back, I’m super stoked, and I’m ready to help you get some amazing results! Let’s get after it!
