So, here we are, January 2013.  As I may or may not have hinted in my last post here, I have been doing some personal work that will be affecting my business structure.

Basically Louise, we be movin’ on up!  To the east-side. To a DE-luxe apartment in the sky-hi-hi…

Seriously though, my services are going to be expanding in value and in price.  Other things will drop away.  The first things to get the ax are my lower priced products and services. DY-NO-MITE!

Detox Badge

1.  My D-I-Y 30-Detox Feast E-book is going to never-never land in two weeks (February 1,2013).  I am going to be re-formatting the program to make it interactive and a much higher price point.  If you want it as it is now, you have 2 weeks to grab it.  I am lowering the price from $47 USD (170nis) to $35 USD (130nis) to clear it out.

Folks, this program is a LIFE CHANGER.  Every single person who has bought it and done it on their own, has written back and told me the amazing impact it has had on their life and health.  Just today in fact, I got the following email:

Hi Emily! I just wanted to tell you that my friend X and I did your 30 day detox right after Purim this past year, and I’ve been completely off sugar ever since! I had one piece of cheesecake on Shavuot, but nothing else, and I feel better than I ever have in my entire life – much more energy, clearer skin, less dark facial hair, and of course, I’ve lost weight – 12 kilo so far. Thank you so much!

When I decided to do the detox, I did it because I was curious to see if anyone could really get un-addicted to sugar – I wasn’t really in it for the health, I just didn’t like the out-of-control feeling that I had when I started eating something sweet and couldn’t stop. I wasn’t planning to make a life change! But after only a couple of weeks, I felt SO much better in so many different aspects of my life, and I just couldn’t find a reason to go back. People hear that I don’t eat sugar and they say “oh, that must be so hard” but it really truly isn’t! I’ve just gotten used to a less-sweet life, and I feel totally happy and satisfied, and am not even tempted when others eat sweets. And only now that I see the dramatic results on my body do I realize how unhealthy I must have been.  ~T.C.

People, if getting off sugar sounds impossible, I promise I make it easy and delicious!  AND I help you formulate an “exit strategy” for what to do when the detox is over (ie, can you consume sugar, wheat and dairy in moderation or are there things you would be better off eliminating completely).

To grab your copy of the 30-Day Detox Feast ebook at the amazing discounted price before it disappears forever, go to this page HERE.

Energy To Burn

leaping

I am a busy business owner, mother of 2, wife, chief cook and bottle washer, who keeps the house, does the grocery shopping, works out daily, and cooks all the family’s food from scratch. Think I’m tired? The truth is that my eyes fly open at 5:30am every morning with no alarm, and I buzz and hum with energy all day long with no caffeine-crutch. Want to know how I do it?

Here are my top 10 tips on raising your energy level through the roof:

1.  Ditch the Coffee

I call coffee “fake fuel” because it really hides the fact that without it, you’re utterly exhausted.  Your body uses fatigue to tell you that something is wrong.  Coffee’s just a blindfold hiding the real problem.  Not only that, caffeine burns out your adrenal glands, which will cause even worse fatigue and stubborn weight gain down the road.  When you drink a cup of coffee, it’s like sticking your finger in an electric socket.  Your adrenal glands pump out adrenaline, your fight or flight hormone, which causes that alertness you crave, along with rapid heart rate, dilated pupils and increased blood pressure.  Your body thinks a bear is chasing you.  Stress anyone??

2.  Sleep

Now that you’re off the joe, you can ascertain what your baseline energy level is.  Chances are, you’re fatigued because your not getting enough sleep.  Most people don’t get enough sleep just because they are not in the habit of going to bed early, or they don’t manage their time well (tv and computer usage go here), or they indulge in too many late night social commitments.  While the one-off wedding or party shouldn’t cause too much trouble, booking your schedule so tightly that you are out every night is draining your energy and lowering your vitality.  It’s OK to RSVP “No” sometimes.

Stick to a regular sleep schedule of early to bed and early to rise and you will have loads of energy!  Resist the urge to sleep in when time allows – you know that just makes you groggier.

An aside to the sleep-deprived parents of little ones:  I know this lack of sleep is not your fault.  My youngest didn’t sleep through the night until he was FOUR, so you’ve got my empathy.  Just know this time will come to an end eventually.  Hang in there and sleep whenever you can.

Many people complain to me that they cannot fall asleep earlier. Do everything else on this list and then get back to me.  I can tell you, that on the days I don’t exercise vigorously, I too have trouble drifting off.

3.  Exercise

I don’t care if you workout at the gym, on the roads or by cleaning the house and tending a garden.  Pushing yourself physically makes you fall into a deep, restful sleep at night.  Plus it gives you energy, oxygen and vitality during the day.

4.  Assess Your Commitments

Most of my clients are women who take the weight of the world on their shoulders and then berate their bodies for giving out under the burden.  I honestly have to give these ladies PERMISSION to stop taking on every single responsibility under the sun!  This is called Martyr Syndrome and not only does no one like a martyr (despite your conviction to the contrary), martyrs freakin DIE before their time, ladies!  Let other people do their share and you do yours, divided up nice and equally with a piece for all.

5.  Quit your job

Didn’t expect that one, did you?  If you love your job, then never mind, this one’s not for you.  But so often we are exhausted by dreading the day or the task ahead of us.  Of course, work probably won’t be fun all the time, but it’s not meant to be horrible all the time either.  I’ve got so many clients who think they are trapped in dreadful, stressful jobs – maybe they are a few years away from retirement, or on the other spectrum just need to keep their noses to the grindstone to pay off school loans, or whatever.  As the Reigning Queen of Thinking Outside the Career Box, I am here to tell you to go ahead and think outside the career box.   There’s plenty of interesting work to do which people will pay you for.  The biggest part of my A.M. vitality is being totally excited about the day ahead of me!

6.  Hydrate

We’ve already discussed this one here.  Most people walk around dried up and dehydrated.  Drink lots of water.  Now that you’re off coffee, you can drink water instead. ;-)

7.  Get outside

Fresh air does a world of good.  Step out at lunchtime, take a walk in the evening, get up early and meditate in the grass while the sun rises.  Breathe!

8.  Get more oxygen

Yawning means your brain needs oxygen.  Next time you are hit with a wave of fatigue, take 5-10 deep breaths.  Extra points for doing it outside.

9.  Eat Whole Foods

You knew I would say this.  Junk food drains you, whole foods energize you.  Read the rest of my website and enough said about that.

10.  Go get a blood test

Tell your doctor you are experiencing fatigue and ask to have your iron, B-12,  and thyroid tested.  Go the extra mile and get your hormones tested too. Many women have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep when their hormones are out-of-whack.  If you’re following a low-carb diet and you’re tired all the time, then your B-vitamins are probably depleted.  Get it checked, supplement, and eat some brown rice for Pete’s sake.

11. Bonus (and Shameless Plug):  DETOX!  My 30-Day Detox is a great way to get that energy flowing!  New group starting June 22nd at 11am (New Time) in Kfar Saba.  Click HERE.

Hydrate with this Cooling Watermelon Refresher

Number One Tip to keep yourself from wilting in the summer heat = Hydrate!

We all know how important water is but many still aren’t drinking enough.  When I do the 30-Day Detox Groups, the very first habit we adopt is drinking a glass of lemon water each morning upon arising.  It can be hot water, cold or anywhere in between, and you can add as much or as little lemon (or none) as you wish.  This ONE STEP is usually the one people find the most transformative and is the one main habit people tend to keep long after the detox is over.

You see, when we sleep, we get dehydrated, through sweating and breathing and basically being 5-8 hours without a drink.  Yet, when we wake up, what’s the first thing we generally drink?  Coffee!  And what’s coffee?  Yup, a diuretic, which means that it pulls water out of your cells to be eliminated in your urine.  In other words, it dehydrates you even more.

So, instead of that dehydrating coffee right off the bat, try the lemon water FIRST.  You can have you coffee after you have given your body a lovely water rinse.  Just remember that for every cup of coffee you drink throughout the day, drink 1-2 glasses of pure water to off-set the dehydrating effect of the coffee.

In addition to keeping you alive, drinking more water helps with weight loss and hunger levels, it gives you more energy, brighter, clearer skin and fresher breath and body smells.

What’s that you say?  You hate water?  Here are 5 tips I share with clients to make water drinking easier:

1. Hot water: with or without lemon (very detoxifying!)

2. Cool water: Put in a pitcher or environmentally friendly bottle and add orange, mint, cucumber, lemon or lime

3. Herbal Teas – so many varieties! Steep, then drink warm or pour over ice and add lemon.  Do like the Israelis and brew a tea of garden herbs: Melissa, Louisa, Sage and Mint.  Make a digestive tea of a piece of whole Ginger Root and Fennel Seeds.

4. Sparkling Mineral Water with 2 oz unsweetened cranberry or pomegranate juice – add a lime and you have a daytime cocktail!

5. Choose fun glasses or environmentally friendly bottles for your water cocktails. I use a big clear goblet that reminds me of a royal chalice – I feel like a queen when I drink out of it!

And although water is the best re-hydrator, you can also enjoy water-filled fruits and veggies like cucumbers and watermelon.  Try this delicious watermelon smoothie:

watermelon refresher

Cooling Watermelon Refresher

2 cups watermelon

juice of 1/2 lemon

few drops of stevia if you wish

1/2 cup ice if your blender crushes ice, water if it doesn’t

Blend all,  serve in a glass, and get your Juicy on!

Did you Miss Me?

Well, I missed you.

After the race I really needed to spend some time re-grouping.  You know, you hold something as a Goal in front of you for so long and then when you achieve it, you have to stop and think “What will I do next?”

But while I was trying to decide my next move, my husband decided to surprise us with a family vacation to Greece!  So off we went, totally spontaneous-like.

love at the parthenonLove-struck at the Parthenon

We had our Passover seder with Chabad of Athens (and 200 other Jews from Greece and all over the world!).  The vacation was awesomely fun, but eating was a bit difficult for me.  Not only was it Passover (no bread or flour products etc), but Greece is not really such a vegetarian-friendly place!  In fact, I found that just asking “Do you have anything Vegetarian?” was a remarkably effective way of getting rid of the restaurant hawkers that follow you down the street trying to convince you to eat in their taverna.  They dropped me like a hot potato every time I asked that!  I ate A LOT of cucumbers, tomatoes, and french fries and not much else!

Now that I have had a few days at home, mainly spent sleeping for hours and hours and eating MY FOODS, my plan for my next goal(s) is solidifying.  Here are some of the things I will be working on here on the blog for May:

Goal #1:  Blog Every day!  I want to blog mostly food and recipes, because quite frankly it has been about 2 months since I have done much interesting cooking and my family looks sad and malnourished.  If I know I have to blog something interesting, I will have to cook it first!

Goal #2:  Do a blog series about getting into the exercise habit, especially about running and training for races.

Goal #3:  Run a couple of workshops in May, probably a 30-Day Detox and also a cooking class.  Let me know if there is anything you’d like to see offered or any times and days you’d like to request.

Goal #4:  I’m teaching a family nutrition workshop at City Kids in Tel Aviv on May 16th at 20:30.  You can read more about that and City Kids HERE.

Goal #5:  Personally I am also working on a few things:  I’m going to be back in the gym after a hiatus, justa working on my fitness.  I’m doing a gigantic project with my coach to help me gain some clarity in a few areas.  And additionally, I want to have May be totally Vegan.  I’ve been eating lots of eggs and dairy in the past 3 weeks or so and I want to cut them back out.  I feel better without them, not to mention how much better my skin is without dairy, Holy Cow,  literally!

So that’s where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going.  I hope you will be here reading with me and leaving me your comments and feedback.

By the way, please note that you can subscribe to get my blog posts delivered right into your email inbox.  That way you don’t have to remember to check on your own.  Right there in the right-hand column is a box that says “Subscribe to my blog via email and never miss another post!” and you just fill in the email address of your choice.  You will then get an email there that YOU MUST CONFIRM or you won’t receive the updates by mail.  After you confirm (just follow the directions), you will get each post about 24 hours after it is published, right in your mailbox, with photos and formatting and all.  It’s awesome and there are already about 20 of you signed up.

Please note that this is NOT the same as being on my newsletter mailing list!  The two lists are entirely separate.  This is just a list for the blog.  To sign up for the newsletter mailing list, and get all my special articles, recipes, tips and special deals, you have to go to the home page and sign up for the Starter Kit.  That will put you on the newsletter mailing list.  Or do it HERE.

You Been Talkin’ ‘Bout Me??

Some things are just too good to keep under wraps.  The testimonials my latest round of Detox participants wrote upon completion of their program, are so awesome that they make me want to cry.

group picture 1In fact, I am crying in this picture of the Tel Aviv Detox Final class, which is why my eyes are closed (photo fail!)

“This program made me focus on ME physically, emotionally and spiritually.  It is not often that I give myself a gift of honoring the things important to self care.”  -Inbal

“With Emily’s guidance I was able to successfully eliminate sugar and wheat, which was easier than I thought!  I feel full of energy and lost a bit of weight and I know that I can maintain a low sugar lifestyle indefinitely.  Emily is super supportive and her recipes are the best!”  - Lymore

“I reduced my cravings SO much!  I realized I can quit sugar and wheat.  The 4 weeks gave me a total vision of the change.  I liked the cooking lessons!  You are very professional Emily and I always felt supported.”  - Galit

“This Detox changed my life.  Before I was eating without any sort of guidance, feeling sluggish and every day was a struggle with food.  I would feel guilty when I ate dessert and loaded up on carbs.  Now, the more I became focused on this program , the less energy I spent thinking about food and wondering what to eat.  Also my energy levels have increased and my digestion is definitely improved.”  - Francesca

“This program has taught me that I can have control over what I eat and how I look and feel.  I now know that it is up to me to make lifestyle changes if I’d like to live healthier.  I am done with the mindless eating because I now have control over what I put in my mouth.”  - Maayan

“I learned that I can cook healthily for my family and it tastes really good!  They loved everything I did.  They were, as I was, so pleased that I was finally finding control.  I have been trying for so long.  THANK YOU!”   -Sue

“This experience is a true gift.  It gave me exactly what I needed to help myself and enabled me to see clearly where I am going with my health and happiness.”  - Anne

“I realized that I can take control of my eating habits more than I thought I could.  I feel lighter and have dropped weight.  Whereas with Weight Watchers I come to a point where I stop sticking to the rules,  I feel with this programme I can adapt what I learned into my daily routine.  Delicious recipes too!”  - Linda

Training Log T minus 14 weeks

I am going to keep a weekly training log here as I prepare for the Tel Aviv Half Marathon on April 8, 2011.  I hope it will be interesting even if you are not a runner. (yet!)

First of all, yes, there are only 14 weeks until April 8th.  And that means 15 weeks until Pesach!  So those of you who are still thinking “The summer’s a long way off, I have plenty of time to lose this winter weight… ahem… wake up call, you do NOT!

Secondly, yes I know I am an idiot to be living in a metric country and still logging in miles and miles per hour.  I also understand that because I am sill thinking in miles, if my training computer does not work on race day, as often happens due to interference from other people’s units, that I will be pacing  myself totally blind.  I am just being stubborn and clinging to old ways, similar to my resistance to speaking the actual language of the country I have been living in for 3 years.  I know, I know…  I will take my penance at the bottom of the page…

Weekly Training Re-cap:

Sunday, Jan 2nd: 60 minutes Spinning

Monday, Jan 3rd:  60 minutes Speed work 4 x 400 (4.76 miles total)

Tuesday, Jan 4th:  Strength Training Body Weight and Dumbells

Wednesday, Jan 5th:  65 minutes Tempo Run (5.66 miles total)

Thursday, Jan 6th:  I usually Spin on Thursday but took it as a Rest Day

Friday, Jan 7th:  78 minute Distance Run  (7.02 miles total)

Saturday, Jan 8th:  Rest Day

Mileage Total:  17.44 miles (Google says that 28km)

Weekly Reflections:  This was a tough week physically.  Last week I had a sinus infection and didn’t work out at all.  December in general was not great health wise and I put on a kilo which makes me feel pretty heavy and sluggish.  My knees hurt, one of my hamstrings is protesting, and the dreaded plantar fascitis is tingling.  I HATE running fast!  I like plodding along peacefully. Whine, whine, whine.  But my next run is not until Monday and I am Detoxing with the 30-Day Detox Group I’m leading, so in a few days I expect to be feeling stronger.

Training Fuel Highlights:  Amaranth!  A grain that is actually a seed, amaranth cooks up as a gloppy, yummy porridge.  With 28 grams of protein in one cup, twice the calcium of a glass of milk(!), five times as much iron as wheat, gluten-free and packed with poly-unsaturated fats, we should all be getting more amaranth in our diets!  Aside from the amaranth, I ate lots of oats, green drinks and green smoothies, loads of salad, roast veggies, lentil soup, chick peas, tofu and seitan.

Training Song of the Week:  OK, I deserve this one. (Warning for tender-ears: Billie drops an F-bomb in the first few seconds of this)

Extreme Self-Care Part 1

I know that for many of my readers, December feels like this:

One Great Big Balancing Act

For some it’s the Holidays that throw them off balance.  For others it’s travel and still others have a difficult time adapting to the colder weather and darker, shorter days.

We all know the usual tips to restore balance: eat well, exercise, get sunlight, get enough sleep…  but if we COULD do those things, we wouldn’t have gotten off balance in the first place, right?

So today I want to introduce the concept of Extreme Self-Care and I want to share some lesser known techniques to help soothe the soul and restore equilibrium.  First up:

The Hot Towel Scrub

Body scrubbing can be done before or after your bath or shower, or anytime during the day. All you need is a sink with hot water and a medium-sized cotton washcloth.

For the maximum effect, scrub your body twice a day: once in the morning and once again in the evening. Scrub from 2 minutes to 20 minutes, depending on how much time you have. The process of the hot towel scrub has a deeper physical, mental and emotional effect when done at the sink, as opposed to in the shower.

Directions:

  • turn on the hot water and fill the sink
  • hold the towel at both ends and place in the hot water
  • wring out the towel
  • while the towel is still hot and steamy, begin to gently scrub the skin
  • do one section of the body at a time: for example, begin with the hands and fingers and work your way up the arms to the shoulders, neck and face, then down to the chest, upper back, abdomen, lower back, tush, legs, feet and toes
  • scrub until the skin becomes slightly pink or until each part becomes warm
  • reheat the towel often by dipping it in the sink of hot water after scrubbing each section or as soon as the towel starts to cool

Benefits:

  • reduces muscle tension
  • reenergizes in the morning and deeply relaxes at night
  • opens the pores to release stored toxins
  • softens deposits of hard fat below the skin and prepares them for discharge
  • allows excess fat, mucus, cellulite and toxins to actively discharge to the surface rather than to accumulate around deeper vital organs
  • relieves stress through meditative action of rubbing the skin
  • calms the mind
  • promotes circulation
  • activates the lymphatic system, especially when scrubbing (gently!) underarms and groin
  • easy massage and deep self-care
  • can be a sacred moment in your day, especially if done with candlelight and a drop or two of essential oil, such as lavender, rose, orange, or ylang ylang
  • creates a profound and loving relationship with the body, especially parts not often shown care, especially for those of us with body image problems
  • spreads energy through the chakras

This morning I did a hot towel scrub with a few drops of lavender and ylang ylang in the water.  Then I dressed and drank a tall glass of freshly-squeezed orange juice.  It left me feeling really energized and well-taken care of.  What a great way to start the day!

I know it’s a busy time of year, but let’s make an effort to carve out a few minutes here and there to nurture ourselves and arrive at 2011 feeling great and not like 2010 ran you down like a semi!

Caesar Salad, Hold the Caesar

Today was class #3 of this round of my 30-Day Detox.  The participants have now been off of sugar completely for 2 weeks and off of wheat for one week.  Today we took out dairy.  Results of the detox are as wonderful as ever:

-Weight loss
-Drastically reduced appetite
-Cravings greatly diminished
-More energy
-Beautiful skin
-A proud sense of accomplishment and control

I love my clients.  They are beautiful people, inside AND out!

Today I served them lunch, as always.  We had Curried Tofu Scramble with Tomatoes and Spinach, Vegan Caesar Salad, and Quinoa.

This salad rocks my world and I share it today with you my readers.  Enjoy!

Vegan Caesar Salad
No chickens, anchovies, or cows were harmed in the making of this salad.  Lettuce and cashews however, were not so lucky…

½ head romaine lettuce

1 tomato, diced
6 very thin slices of red onion
2 T sliced black olives
Freshly grounnd black pepper
2 T Ranch Dressing, as follows
Ranch Dressing:
1 cup raw cashews, soaked a few hours or overnight and drained
1 date, soaked with cashews
1/2 avocado OR 1/4 cup olive oil
1 clove garlic
¾ cup water
2 T fresh lemon juice
¼ tsp sea salt
1 T minced fresh basil or 1 tsp dried
1 T minced fresh dill or 1 tsp dried
Place all in FP and blend until creamy.  Toss 2 Tablespoons with salad.  Add more dressing as desired.

And in some inane randomness…

This is my Polar HRM and Trainer telling us all that I have just completed a 7.57mile run:
and that I torched 981 calories on this run…
enabling me to re-fuel with this:
Boo-yah!

Group Hug

Last night we wrapped up the 7-Day Sugar DetoxI have to say that this was by far, my best group yet.  Every single participant in this program was really just a wonderful person and enjoyable to listen to and be with.  We all learned so much from one another – not just from my teaching – which is such a bonus and treat for me.  One of the participants had an amazing Big Why already in place and it was so delightful for me to listen to the thoughts of someone so newly blammo’ed.   I picked her brain in public.  Truly a thing of beauty that!

Everyone managed to give sugar the Heave-Ho for the 7 days of the program and all realized that it really wasn’t as hard as they had anticipated.  All felt armed with a greater sense of control and with the inspiration to move forward with generally healthier habits for the future.  I shared a ton of amazing sugar-free, healthy and delicious recipes, and we cooked and sampled several of them right during class.

Such as…

Super Swiss Chard Sesame Fig Calcium Supreme
Pumpkin Tofu Curry
Entirely Fruit-Sweetened Whole Grain Chocolate Muffins

which deserve another picture…

Yum.
Everything was delicious if I do say so myself.  People actually paid for this class, so it wouldn’t be fair to post any recipes for free, but soon I will have recipe ebooks for purchase on the new website.  WooHoo, that’s gonna be great!
May I serve you some curry?”
